http://shadow-corp.com

I suppose I could have just posted a topic asking everyone to review Shadow-Corp.com so I can feel all important and what not, but content-less posts are so overrated anyway. I think I may actually have something to say!

smile.gif

About

Shadow-Corp.com is a dedicated forum for the web site, System-Zero.com (our main site) which happens to not be up at this time. System-Zero is a gaming headlines related site, but due to so many server moves I haven't had the time to get it back up and running as I had hoped, instead I left it redirecting to Shadow-Corp as I continue work on it's forums, Shadow Corp.

Bit of History

Shadow-Corp.com started off on an old Ikonboard, I believe it was Ikonboard 3.0 Beta. I had created my first ever skin (for anything) on that old forum software. Apparently it was a hit since many people liked it after downloading it, and 1 guy even payed me to modify it all to blue for his web site since it fit his theme perfect. I don't have screens of the first Shadow-Corp.com unfortunately.

One day when I got an email from one of my fellow skinners at iBhackers.com and he told me about the new Invisionboard and that Matt (creator of Ikon) started it. He convinced me to switch over and to make skins for it, hence the reasons why I am here often.

To my surprise it worked very much like Ikonboard did which made skinning easy for me. I was set! Too bad I never really had much TIME to make skins but I did get some running on Shadow-Corp.com.

Shadow Corp Reborn

This newest piece I dub "Shadow Corp 2". This is technically my 3rd ever skin template since my cousin registered Shadow-Corp.com for us. There are 5 other skins but they are classified as Generation 1 (which you may have already seen before last year), they were the SAME template as the original only multi colors and themes. This new skin up for review is basically the same general design (not templates) only it's in "Generation 2" of skins up for selection to my members.

(If you are interested in seeing the past skins you can go to the board using the demo login and Choose the skins you want to view under the "Skinilizer" options at the top left of the forum. [1] are the old Skins and [2] is the newest skin. Beware, if someone else using this account selects a skin you may be viewing that same one!)

login: demo
pass: demo

The URL is: http://shadow-corp.com

Little Extras, Mods and Hacks

Aside from the skin, I also made a few mini-hacks for myself (and re-did an older one from here), haven't released any of them since I don't think they're significant enough.

1. Bottom of every page displays Forum Stats and Online Users. I wrote a simple MySQL query to pick all that up and format it out.

2. PHP in wrapper/templates. I modified a few lines in "sources/functions.php" to open the entire forum to run PHP code within the wrappers and templates. That's how I got hack 1. (see above) to work on all pages of the forum. I also use this for other special functions within the forums as well.

3. Custom pages. The Skinilizer is using the old Custom Pages mod for iB 1.1, I re-tooled it completely to work under 1.3 and improved the Admin Pages for it.

4. Board Avatars. As you can see every forum has it's own little mini avatars on the index page. This wasn't really a hack but I just put the "forum-id" tag in front of a .jpg extension so it will pick up an image with that same ID and display it.

5. Board Info. When you enter a specific forum you will see another section at the top letting you know of your location. Nothing fancy, nothing to brag about but it's still something I put minor effort into.

6. I used members group IDs to display (in the background of 'Logged in as') specific images for a specific member of a group logged in. As a guest you will be default to "Mutant", when logged in you are shown as "Outlander" or "Citizen" or what other group you are in. I am an "Overseer" which is our name for admin. If you didn't pick it up by now, these are groups named after groups of people in Fallout II. smile.gif

7. Java Navigation. Nothing special either but I put a site wide Java Navigation Panel at the top right. Back, reload and forward just like browser buttons.

In Conclusion

I know I may get my butt busted over reviews (since I am typically very critical toward other's skins) but hopefully that won't create a biased review. I look forward to seeing what people may have to say over 6 months of on-and-off work. Thanks a lot guys!

Look s great, only one problem i have with it is text like

"ADDED: New Skin Pack, Genesis Red" is just a tad to bright.

I do not do create/support/upgrade modifications anymore.
I am not currently giving out permission to upgrade my modifications either.
It's amazing how nobody reads signatures, I bet if I said i'd ban everyone who messaged me for support, they'd still message me and then complain when they got banned.

Yeah it seems others have told me the same. Maybe it's because my eyes adjusted to it working on it for months. I'll reduce it down and see how it turns out. Thanks.

Right Im going to start doing tests on these sites (just in case anyone is interested)

W3C:
QUOTE
Fatal Error: No DOCTYPE specified!

I could not parse this document, because it does not include a DOCTYPE Declaration. A DOCTYPE Declaration is mandatory for most current markup languages and without such a declaration it is impossible to validate this document.

You should place a DOCTYPE declaration as the very first thing in your HTML document. For example, for a typical XHTML 1.0 document:

      <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
        "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
      <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
        <head>
          <title>Title</title>
        </head>

        <body>
          <!-- ... body of document ... -->
        </body>
      </html>

For XML documents, you may also wish to include an "XML Declaration" even before the DOCTYPE Declaration, but this is not well supported in older browsers. More information about this can be found in the XHTML 1.0 Recommendation.

The W3C QA Activity maintains a List of Valid Doctypes that you can choose from, and the WDG maintains a document on "Choosing a DOCTYPE".

Because I'm such a rebel I make sure to exclude:

CODE
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"
        "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
      <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">

To mess with their systems, they seem to wanna cater to the world, such a liberal stance. I want an exclusive club with beer and games, you know fun! tongue.gif

As for the CSS, its valid and runs in IE6 and since I made it specifically for IE6, that's all that matters. Whats the color blindness test? I'm interested in seeing that one!

I was more interested in what you were talking about concerning an idea you had? Peeked my curiousity. I did all the graphics in Photoshop 7. The only images I did NOT create was the Logo background super nova image and the small thumbs next to each board. Everything else was my own creation.

I made that mistake but belive it or not over 40% of the people that view your site will do it in brousers other than ie so you need to make it accessable to them (sorry not accessable but viewable to them)

Color blindness test is Here

Uh... I wasn't offended with anything. I don't see how you came to that conclusion. I'll use more emoticons next time. --> laugh.gif

96% of my general userbase is IE6 according to the latest stats, but since the CSS wont render in other browsers, it doesn't hurt them. That's how I see the tradeoff. I built this on Mac OSX IE5.2 and it doesn't render the scrollbars CSS, but I know on the Windows IE6 it will. It's basically an extra feature I tapped into, even though it's not a fully WC3 support feature.

And actually, I am almost prepared to block specific browsers from my server such as Mozilla, Opera and FireFox. I have already forced a dozen people back to use only IE when coming to Shadow-Corp and hopefully more will follow. There is a larger VIP area of the board you cannot see unless you had the "Citizen" status, lots of goodies that keep people going in. Mainly those people have been forced into IE. :ryan:
